Downsizing without rushing
Work in manageable sessions and keep meaningful belongings central to the plan.
Choose a small place to begin
Start with one drawer, shelf or category rather than a whole room. Choose a session length that works for you and stop before it becomes tiring. You can begin gathering information long before a move date is known.
Keep a genuine “not sure” group
Separate belongings into keep, not sure and ready to let go. Give meaningful items time. Taking a photo may be useful if you want one, but it is not a substitute for keeping something that matters to you.
Check the destination first
- Measure furniture, doors and room layouts.
- Ask what storage and personal furniture are allowed.
- Set aside everyday items and familiar things you want within reach.
- Do not dispose of a useful item until the new arrangements are understood.
Agree how helpers will participate
You decide what leaves the home. Helpers can lift, sort, label and arrange transport without taking over decisions. Ask for written estimates for removals, donations, storage or disposal where needed, and keep valuables and private documents separate.
