A family conversation guide
Respectful prompts that keep the homeowner’s preferences and choices central.
Ask permission to begin
Choose a time and place the homeowner is comfortable with. Ask whether they want to talk about housing or practical help today. Not being ready for a conversation is not agreement to have someone else decide.
Start with their priorities
- What would you like to keep the same?
- What is becoming difficult at home?
- What would make a move feel more manageable?
- Who would you like involved?
- Which questions would you like answered first?
Offer choices and time
Offer manageable choices rather than a complete plan to approve. Ask before contacting providers, arranging a visit or sorting belongings. Avoid pressure to sell, move quickly or dispose of sentimental items.
Confirm the communication boundaries
Agree what may be shared and with whom. Family involvement does not automatically confer authority, and older age does not establish incapacity. Legal authority questions belong with a lawyer.
